“The cast on March 17, 2023 was top-class in the main roles. George Gagnidze in the title role as Rigoletto was completely absorbed in the characterization of this “court jester”, who is by no means funny here, but rather a person who suffers and a father who only wants to protect his daughter from the outside world and the decadent court society. With his dark, expressive heroic baritone and his powerful performance, he came pretty close to being an ideal for Rigoletto.”
Wolfgang Schmitt, IOCO
“As part of the Italian Opera Weeks, the Hamburg State Opera was able to hire three acclaimed world stars for the revival of the 1994 Andreas Homoki production of Verdi’s “Rigoletto”: The soprano Pretty Yende can be seen as Gilda, while Matthew Polenzani performs the Duke of Mantua. The title role is sung by Georgian baritone George Gagnidze, who recently appeared as Scarpia at the Met in New York.
(…)
George Gagnidze is this evil jester and sings his part in a voice that is often angry but that can also sound subtle – he calls himself a “vegliardo”, i.e. an “old man”, when he pleads the nasty courtiers, who with their Venetian masks look like aggressive birds, to give him back his kidnapped daughter.”

“George Gagnidze, a veteran of his signature role, which he embodies masterfully with exemplary intelligence, (...) throws himself admirably into this demanding part: ... showing no noticeable signs of age ... he often reaches moments of true emotion, culminating in a faultless and particularly poignant finale.” François Lehel, Opéra
