George Gagnidze just brought his celebrated portrayal of Scarpia in Tosca to the Las Palmas Opera in Gran Canaria. Here below you will find a couple of reviews:
“George Gagnidze, for his part, delivered a magnificent Scarpia, with all the malignity expected of him and which the baritone accentuates with the chiaroscuro of his powerful voice and the ironic tone of his phrasing.”
Agustín Arocha, Ópera Actual
“The internationally well-known Georgian George Gagnidze, who often sings at the Met, was a strong visual and dramatic contrast to the two [Grimaldi and Beczala] as Scarpia. Like a Tito Gobbi from a glorious past in a red brocade costume in the second act, incredibly authoritarian and with a certain corpulence also frightening, he gave the police chief all the necessary brutality, as well as loud, black cynicism. He was able to use in the best possible way his powerful and well-controlled baritone, which was as multifaceted as it was clear. The trio was therefore of the very first quality!”
Klaus Billand, Opernmagazin / Der Opernfreund / Der Neue Merker
“The Georgian baritone George Gagnidze – a regular in the MET Opera Seasons – showed a voice of beautiful timbre that was also projected with great power in every corner of the theater. Impeccable in his role as an actor, he gave a “Te Deum” of the highest level with a powerful vocal instrument and beautiful color… . In the second act, he exhibited elegant phrasing and an expressive singing line that, together with the great acting work of a singer who has surpassed a hundred performances as the evil Scarpia, astonished the audience that almost filled the Teatro Pérez Galdós.”

“George Gagnidze, a veteran of his signature role, which he embodies masterfully with exemplary intelligence, (...) throws himself admirably into this demanding part: ... showing no noticeable signs of age ... he often reaches moments of true emotion, culminating in a faultless and particularly poignant finale.” François Lehel, Opéra
