George Gagnidze returns to one of his signature Verdi roles this weekend, singing the title role in Rigoletto at the Shangyin Opera House in Shanghai. The production opens on June 12, with a second performance on June 14.
Presented by Shanghai Opera House, the production is a new co-production with the Royal Ballet & Opera. Verdi’s Rigoletto, adapted from Victor Hugo’s Le roi s’amuse, remains one of the composer’s most compelling works: a drama of power, cruelty, paternal love and fate, shaped by some of the most incisive music in the Italian repertoire.
The production is directed by Oliver Mears, Director of Opera at the Royal Ballet & Opera, and conducted by Xu Zhong. George Gagnidze leads the cast as Rigoletto, joined by Sofia Fomina as Gilda, Ivan Ayon Rivas as the Duke of Mantua, Huang Junpeng as Sparafucile and Wang Xiaoxi as Maddalena.
The Shanghai Opera House Chorus, Shanghai Opera House Orchestra and Shanghai Opera House Dance Troupe also take part in the production.
Performances take place at the Shangyin Opera House Opera Hall, 6 Fenyang Road, Xuhui, Shanghai, on June 12 at 7:30 PM and June 14 at 2:00 PM.
