Scarpia in “Tosca” at the Metropolitan Opera

George Gagnidze is back at the Metropolitan Opera in one of his most important roles, Scarpia in Tosca. The star baritone will appear in five performances from September 25 to October 11, with Aleksandra Kurzak in the title role and SeokJong Baek as Cavaradossi. Xian Zhang and Marco Armiliato (October 6) will conduct, the staging is by David McVicar.

The performances on October 6 and 11 will be broadcast on SiriusXM and will be audio streamed on the website of the Metropolitan Opera.

George Gagnidze’s Scarpia has enjoyed a significant relationship with New York City. The Georgian singer made his Big Apple debut as the villainous Roman chief of police in a 2008 concert performance at Avery Fisher Hall conducted by the late Lorin Maazel. This was followed by the premiere of Luc Bondy’s new staging of Tosca at the Metropolitan Opera in the 2009/10 season, where he starred in 25 performances until 2013. In 2021, he first appeared in the David McVicar production. During this run, he will reach his 45th performance as Scarpia at the Metropolitan Opera, ranking among the top five singers who appeared most often in the role in the history of the new Met.
