After three performances earlier in the season, on April 27, 2023, George Gagnidze returns to the role of Amonasro in Aida at the Metropolitan Opera for six additional shows, in the Sonya Frisell production and under the musical direction of Paolo Carignani.
He will share the stage with Angela Meade and Leah Crocetto alternating in the title role, Marcelo Álvarez and Jorge de León as Radamès, Olesya Petrova as Amneris, and Christian Van Horn as Ramfis.
George Gagnidze is a veteran Amonasro at the Met. Following his role debut in this very same Frisell staging in 2012, he appeared as the King of Ethiopia in several runs and will sing his 26th Amonasro at the Met on the last performance on May 18.
This last performance can rightfully be considered historical, as the legendary and much beloved Frisell production is being staged at the Met for the very last time, after a glorious 35-year run.
